Mily
-
Mily (pronounced My-lee) has been clean and sober since 1984. She arrived at Alcoholics Anonymous in San Francisco at the age of 21, sporting a purple mohawk, leather chaps, and plenty of accessories. Thanks to AA’s Third Tradition—“The only requirement for membership is a desire to stop drinking”—she was welcomed with open arms. When she reached the Third Step and was encouraged to find a power greater than herself, she chose Grace Jones.
Over the past 41 years, Mily has not only grown in her recovery but also developed a deep interest in AA history. Her journey began with visits to the homes of AA’s co-founders:
The Wilson House, East Dorset, VT – Birthplace of Bill W. and final resting place of both Bill and Lois Wilson, co-founder of Al-Anon
Dr. Bob’s Home, Akron, OH – The longtime residence of Dr. Bob and his wife, Anne Smith
Stepping Stones, Bedford Hills, NY – Historic home of Bill and Lois Wilson
Inspired by these visits, Mily began researching the often-overlooked contributions of women and LGBTQ members in AA’s early history. For the past six years, she has been delivering engaging and informative PowerPoint history talks, including:
Marty Mann: Author of “Women Suffer Too,” a trailblazing lesbian from Chicago and one of the first women in AA
Florence R.: Author of “A Feminine Victory,” the only alcoholic woman featured in the 1st edition of the Big Book
Our Family Scrapbook: 7 LGBTQ AA Pioneers – How We Saved the Day!
In addition to her presentations, Mily serves as an Advisor, Ambassador, and Archive Volunteer at Stepping Stones and contributes quarterly historical segments to the AA Grapevine Podcast.
Her passions extend beyond AA history to include travel and art. Mily lives in San Francisco with her wife of 33 years, Susan—and both are thrilled to be visiting Chicago!
